Position Summary

The Communications and Engagement Associate is responsible for contributing to the general communications and engagement efforts of Audubon Alaska, a state program of the National Audubon Society. They will develop, coordinate, and assist with a variety of communications campaigns for state programs, implementing a range of tactics including but not limited to social media and email engagement, earned media placements, designed collateral, community events, and internal strategies and reports. The Communications Associate will track and report engagement and results from communications campaigns. They will also work directly with staff and vendors to support the efforts of Audubon Alaska to achieve our strategic goals.

 

This position will assist the Senior Communications Manager in building awareness of Audubon Alaska’s programs and conservation priorities through a variety of methods including but not limited to community and online events, such as Katchemak Bay ShoreBird Festival and the Arctic Refuge Virtual Birdfest. S/he will work closely with chapters to facilitate strong connections between and among chapters and Audubon Alaska staff to help further Audubon’s mission and goals.

 

This role reports to the Senior Communications Manager and is based in Anchorage, AK.

Essential Functions

  • In coordination with the Senior Communications Manager, implement communications strategies that will broaden Audubon’s visibility and reach, enhance development goals, and deepen the impact of our work.
  • Work closely with the Senior Communications Manager to draft written communications materials.
  • Using our strategic communications goals as guidance, research and create a schedule of community events where Audubon Alaska should have a booth or table. Track and evaluate effectiveness of our presence at the event by establishing event objectives and measuring outcomes.
  • Engage with community members across the state at community events in order to create awareness of Audubon Alaska’s conservation issues, empower advocates, and increase membership. 
  • Assist in securing local earned media for Audubon Alaska initiatives and other regional conservation priorities.
  • Assist with digital communications for Audubon Alaska including social media accounts and website. Develop creative methods for increasing engagement.
  • Assist with design, printing, and mailing of creative communications materials in support of strategic initiatives; keep Senior Communications Manager and program staff abreast of progress and key updates.
  • Ensure powerful messaging and consistency across communications vehicles, including the website, email and print newsletters, campaign collateral, reports, and social media.
  • Support development-related communications activities as needed in collaboration with NAS development staff.
  • Track monthly metrics and analytics for digital communications.
  • Evaluate the results and make recommendations to enhance strategy.
  • Carry out other special project assignments determined by the Senior Communications Manager and Executive Director of Audubon Alaska.

Qualifications and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in nonprofit management, marketing, communications, or related field and 3+ years of professional experience required.  Equivalent combination of education and experience also considered.
  • Strong analytical and project management skills; must possess excellent judgment and be comfortable working independently in a fast-paced environment.
  • Excellent written and verbal communications skills a must.
  • Exceptional attention to detail and strong editing skills.
  • A proactive, optimistic approach to work, one with superior interpersonal skills and demonstrated experience working with a wide variety of external audiences.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office; experience with InDesign, PhotoShop, and Illustrator a plus.
  • Experience using media databases such as Cision strongly preferred.
  • Proficiency with social media platforms such as Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram.
  • A flexible approach to work, with a willingness to travel, as needed, and participate in programs occurring after typical business hours.
  • Strong demonstrated interest in wildlife conservation and the mission of the National Audubon Society.
  • A self-starter with a proactive approach to assignments, one with the ability to work both independently and as part of a team, solve problems with limited supervision, and prioritize tasks.
  • Demonstrated ability to create, manage and document processes and procedures.
