Position Summary

Audubon Dakota is seeking a Communications Coordinator. This person will create and implement communications strategies in support of Audubon Dakota’s mission, brand, and our Working Lands and Bird Friendly Communities programs. The Communications Coordinator will work closely with internal communications among staff and external communications with the organization’s partners and constituents. This position will report to the VP and Executive Director, Audubon Dakota.

 

The ideal candidate is detail oriented, thrives in a fast-pasted environment, and has a passion for engaging the public through social media, press releases, and other communication channels. This is an exciting time to join Audubon Dakota and the position is structured for growth.

Essential Functions

  • Continue to develop the organization’s strategic plan, focusing on goals, benchmarks, and measurement.
  • Improve the Audubon Dakota website as an effective and dynamic tool for connecting with constituents and lead generation. Work with current website administrator to update and maintain links, pages, and content.
  • Write and design communications materials using Dakotas’ brand assets and voice. These include acknowledgment mail stuffers, fact sheets, flyers, events and promotions materials, and others as needed.
  • Manage and grow Dakotas’ Facebook page and groups, and its Twitter profile with a strategic posting schedule, and original and curated content. Engage with followers by responding to comments and generating authentic conversation about Dakotas’ issues and initiatives. Track metrics for post and engagement performance and analyze results for improved campaigns.
  • Manage, and grow, Dakotas’ email subscriber database, its monthly e-newsletter, and email campaigns that amplify Dakotas’ events and projects; inform about urgent issues; and encourage advocacy. Use advanced segmentation, insights, and A/B testing to understand subscriber behavior and improve engagement and reach.
  • Collect and share original, compelling, human-interest stories using visual assets like videography and photography, in addition to strong writing. Develop a content editorial calendar to organize content and use it strategically across Dakotas’ media channels.
  • Work with Dakotas’ staff to develop and implement marketing campaigns for the organization’s priority products, events, and fundraising initiatives, strategically implementing communications channels with compelling storytelling.
  • Work with Dakotas’ Engagement Assistant, industry partners and National Audubon Society’s communications team to develop new opportunities for broadcast and print media outreach. Occasionally write press releases, op-eds, and letters to the editor about timely issues. Pitch local newspapers and radio stations for Dakotas’ fundraising or events promotions.

Qualifications and Experience

  • Minimum 3 years demonstrated experience in communications and marketing, or a similar combination of education and experience, required.
  • Bachelor’s Degree in the natural sciences or education or related field.
  • Must be proficient with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.)
  • A collaborative creative who is proactive, flexible, and innovative.
  • A self-starter, with the ability to manage and prioritize deadlines while working in a fast-paced environment.
  • Excellent interpersonal, written and verbal communications skills.
  • Passionate and knowledgeable about current conservation issues affecting North and South Dakota birds, wildlife, and habitats.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in photography, video, and using social media platforms for outreach or fund raising purposes.
  • Proven experience developing and executing social media strategy.
  • Interest, understanding and commitment to the Audubon Dakota mission and vision.
  • Ability to work long, flexible hours when needed, including weekends and evenings.
  • Must be willing to travel as the job requires.
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license.
  • Working knowledge of Photoshop, InDesign, Salesforce a plus.
