Position Summary

Reporting to the Western Rivers Regional Program Manager at Audubon Rockies, the Senior Coordinator is responsible for assisting the Western Water Program with on-the-ground project grant coordination and proposals, policy research, internal and external communications, chapter outreach, and coalition collaboration with a principal focus on water and habitat issues primarily in Colorado and to a lesser extent Utah and Wyoming. As part of the team, they will work with a broad array of internal and external partners to improve coordination and collaboration, to contribute to Audubon’s efforts to use science, projects, advocacy, and communications to improve the reliability of water supplies for birds and people across the Audubon Rockies territory, as well as produce timely work products throughout the year.


Additionally, they will work in partnership with water stakeholders and like-minded organizations in pursuit of Audubon’s objectives; and they may also advocate on behalf of Audubon to local, state, and federal government officials, including agency staff and decision-makers.


**There is a priority for candidates interested in this position to be based in the Western slope of CO ( Steamboat Springs, Grand Junction, Glenwood Springs, Montrose, Gunnison, and Durango).

Essential Functions

  • Under the guidance of the Western Rivers Regional Program Manager, assist, coordinate and participate in activities to advance collaborative science, advocacy and on-the-ground projects in the Rockies Western Rivers Initiative program.
  • Support and manage select Audubon partnership efforts to promote the protection and restoration of Colorado River basin freshwater habitats for birds and communities.
  • Provide or contribute to communications, web and social, that inform and engage members on local, state and national conservation issues to secure resources for freshwater habitats.
  • Nurture productive relationships with stakeholders, including private landowners, tribal, BIPOC communities, staff from local, state, and federal agencies, and NGOs to conserve birds and habitat.
  • Work closely and effectively with consultants that Audubon retains for science, and project work; act as a liaison on projects and report updates to the Program Manager following meetings.
  • Manage and facilitate chapter volunteer, outreach, and coalition building efforts that support conservation partnerships with chapters.

Qualifications and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in environmental policy or science, biology, communications or related field preferred.
  • 3+ years professional experience in environmental advocacy and/or freshwater habitat restoration work.
  • Some experience with volunteer coordination and management, including recruiting and training preferred.
  • Demonstrated project management skills, including ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously and prioritize key areas of focus.
  • Strong writing, editing, and presentation skills required.
  • Knowledge of Western water or Colorado River issues required.
  • Positive communication and interpersonal skills a must; ability to work with multiple stakeholder groups across a decentralized organization also necessary.
  • Experience working within diverse coalitions.
  • A positive self-starter, with strong organizational and time/project management skills.
  • Ability to work independently and in a team-based environment.
  • Knowledge of Intermountain West birds and ecosystems preferred.
  • Experience working with BIPOC communities a plus.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications, as well as web-based and social media tools.
  • A flexible approach to work, and ability to occasionally travel and work weekends and nights as required.
  • Demonstrated interest in conservation and the mission of the National Audubon Society.
