Now in its second century, Audubon is dedicated to protecting birds and other wildlife and the habitat that supports them. Audubon’s mission is engaging people in bird conservation on a hemispheric scale through science, policy, education and on-the-ground conservation action.  By mobilizing and aligning its network of Chapters, Centers, State and Important Bird Area programs in the four major migratory flyways in the Americas, the organization will bring the full power of Audubon to bear on protecting common and threatened bird species and the critical habitat they need to survive.  And as part of BirdLife International, Audubon will join people in over 100 in-country organizations all working to protect a network of Important Bird Areas around the world, leveraging the impact of actions they take at a local level.  What defines Audubon’s unique value is a powerful grassroots network of approximately 450 local chapters, 120 campus chapters, 17 state and regional offices, 34 Audubon Centers, Important Bird Area Programs in 50 states, and 700 staff across the country. 



Position Summary

Audubon Mid-Atlantic seeks a dynamic, innovative and entrepreneurial leader as its Director of Southeastern Pennsylvania Centers. The Director will report to the Vice President and Executive Director of Audubon Mid-Atlantic (“AMA”) and directly lead Center-based staff.  The position will have four core functions:

  • Oversight of all operations and finances at the John James Audubon Center (Audubon, PA) including:
    • Care for the site’s facilities (including a Visitor Center and historic home and barn); museum exhibits; art, historical and cultural artifacts in the Center’s collection; trails and grounds.
    • Volunteer engagement.
    • Capital projects and deferred maintenance management.
    • Visitor experiences, including conservation education programming on- and off-site.
    • Generating revenue through museum admission fees, retail sales, private rentals and grants.
    • Managing expenses.
  • At both the John James Audubon Center and the Discovery Center, lead efforts to make conservation action accessible to everyone by
    • Reaching out to audiences that are new to environmental stewardship.
    • Creating programming and learning materials focused on conservation and climate change, including hands-on experiences for all ages.
    • Developing family programming, weekend activities and festivals, STEM-supporting school field trips and on-the-ground conservation work focused on local species and habitats at risk.
  • Play a significant and proactive role in fundraising at both centers.
  • Participate as an active and productive leader in the Audubon Mid-Atlantic’s senior management team convened by the Executive Director.

The Director will play an important role in carrying out the mission of Audubon Mid-Atlantic and the National Audubon Society. The programs to be developed will be done so in conjunction with relevant stakeholders and will include elements of Audubon’s core approaches to conservation—education, science, public policy and direct habitat management.


A key outcome for this work will be engaging and building a more diverse constituency to advance Audubon’s local, regional and national goals. The Director will work alongside staff to create and manage culturally-resonant programs collaboratively with local communities, working to address community needs and assets and help advance those actions that positively contribute to the conservation of our region’s birds and the spaces they need to thrive.

Essential Functions

Leadership and Staff Management:

  • Engender a mission-oriented culture that values teamwork, inclusion, equity, diversity, belonging. Bring joy and purpose to the important work of the centers.
  • Oversee all operational aspects at the John James Audubon Center (facilities, budgets, and programs) as well as managing program staff at the Discovery Center; hire and effectively manage all staff in coordination with AMA’s executive director.
  • Maintain an excellent working relationship with the John James Audubon Center’s Advisory Board and Montgomery County partners, while also building Board capacity and engagement; develop and enhance relationships with local environmental and other community leaders, organizations, and stakeholders.
  • Alongside staff, help grow an active volunteer and intern program at both centers.
  • Involve staff and key partners—including, at the John James Audubon Center, its Advisory Board and Montgomery County officials—in developing measurable goals and action plans, as well as a process for monitoring and assessing progress.
  • Preserve and cultivate a culture of mutual respect, individual initiative, collegiality, and diversity; collaborate with staff to identify and implement best practices and evaluate outcomes, where applicable.
  • As part of the Mid-Atlantic leadership team, work on the development and implementation of a new strategic vision for the region and develop annual work plans that advance the goals of that plan.

Program Development and Implementation:

  • Work with Audubon staff and external stakeholders to develop and implement short and long-range strategies that enable the John James Audubon Center and the Discovery Center to support Audubon’s conservation education, habitat conservation (including on-site demonstration projects) and community engagement goals.
  • Support the creation and implementation of dynamic visitor experiences and educational programs designed to increase site visitation and serve diverse audiences with the goal of furthering Audubon’s mission while embracing the unique historical, cultural and natural assets of each site. Create an environment at each site where staff and visitors alike feel valued and welcomed.
  • Work alongside staff to develop and maintain effective partnerships with area community groups to ensure both centers are places where the full diversity of communities are welcome and engaged.
  • Work closely with Audubon Mid-Atlantic’s conservation staff to foster the use of both centers as conservation demonstration sites.
  • Establish on-site educational and outreach programs that contribute to the mission of Audubon Mid-Atlantic and the National Audubon Society. 

Marketing and Community Outreach:

  • Support Audubon Mid-Atlantic communications and center programming staff to develop and implement a marketing and promotions plan for programs at both sites.
  • Develop and deliver effective oral and written presentations and be available to serve as a spokesperson with the media when needed.
  • Partner with the Executive Director and other staff members to cultivate cooperative relationships with Montgomery County (John James Audubon Center) and Philadelphia Outward Bound School (Discovery Center), as well as local and regional environmental and educational groups, local community, business and tourism leaders.

Budget and Fundraising:

  • Work with the Executive Director, Finance and other programmatic and operations staff to develop and deliver required budgeting and financial reporting at the John James Audubon Center.
  • Under the guidance of the development staff, create and implement a financially sustainable development plan for the John James Audubon Center that cultivates and maintains relationships with current donors while identifying and expanding new funding sources.
  • Enhance existing sources of earned income, including program revenue, camp and school program tuition, store sales, rental income, admissions, at the John James Audubon Center. Work as a partner with Jeffrey A. Miller catering leadership and its on-site staff.
  • Effectively and enthusiastically, communicate the case for support of the John James Audubon Center’s program at community and fundraising events.
  • Seek new revenue opportunities, write grants, ensure grant reporting and compliance; assist with and staff special fundraising events at the John James Audubon Center.
  • Assist development and Discovery Center program staff as needed to apply for grant funding and cultivate individual donor relations. 

Land and Facilities Management:

  • With state and center staff, oversee habitat management projects that enhance habitat for birds and other wildlife on Audubon property. Ensure that the physical facilities and grounds of the John James Audubon Center are maintained in a responsible manner that preserves the integrity of the site’s historical and environmental assets. At both sites, work to enhance the land and water’s value to birds and other wildlife, demonstrate Audubon conservation techniques, and provide welcoming, engaging and safe outdoor experiences for visitors.
  • Monitor and maintain trails and facilities, anticipating and remedying deterioration, and possible safety problems to provide for visitor needs.
  • Oversee all operational aspects of the John James Audubon Center’s facility rentals program and special events including but not limited to the promoting and growing of the rental program, scheduling, staffing, planning, preparation and clean-up of events.

Qualifications and Experience

  • 10+ years of experience at an environmental center or other type of public visitor center or museum required.
  • Bachelor’s degree in relevant field, such as environmental science or biology preferred.
  • Demonstrated skills in leading high-performing, collaborative teams within complex organizations with multiple stakeholders.
  • Well-developed problem-solving, time management, organizational and prioritizing skills.
  • Ability to think strategically and creatively, while managing multiple tasks, meeting deadlines and operating in a dynamic, fast-paced environment.
  • Strong organizational and relationship building skills, with excellent attention to detail.
  • Passion for cross-cultural understanding and exploration.
  • Demonstrated experience working with diverse communities.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, both verbal and written, and the ability to represent Audubon to the public. Experience working with volunteers and community members.
  • Independent decision-making and sound judgement.
  • Ability to work independently, as well as part of a team.
  • Proficiency with Excel, Word, PowerPoint, and other key Microsoft Office web-based products.
  • High level of skill using existing office software, along with finding and adapting to new software.
  • Willing to work outdoors in varying terrain and weather conditions.
  • Willing to work occasional weekend and/or evening events.
  • Interest in and commitment to the mission and vision of the National Audubon Society.
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license.
