Position Summary

The Temporary Assistant Land Steward will provide support to the Senior Sanctuary Manager to and help oversee the daily operations of the Paul J. Rainey Wildlife Sanctuary.


This is a full-time position and will require transportation, of seven miles, by boat to the Sanctuary where work will be performed, and overnight stays of one or more nights at a time at the Sanctuary.

Essential Functions

  • Assist with stewardship and maintenance goals at the Paul J. Rainey Sanctuary.
  • Periodic/semi-regular patrols of the waterways by boat.
  • Load lawn tractor into boat and mow various parts of the levee system around the sanctuary at water control structures (protects against fire), and at viewing stations (e.g., Pierson Ponds, Pig Trap, etc.).
  • Inspect levees for breaches and other issues.
  • Mow lawn around house and trim.
  • Replace boundary signs along the waterways as needed.
  • Operate water control structures around the sanctuary as needed.
  • Collect water quality measurements for Deep Lake WMU Hydrological Restoration Project.
  • Assess status on nesting terns on WCS Deep Lake Tall Terrace Project.
  • Assist with all aspects of maintenance of grounds including but not limited to property, buildings, boats, and equipment.
  • Monitor and remove nuisance animals including but not limited to coyotes and hogs as allowed in the Deed of Donation.
  • Ensure that all Audubon equipment in your possession is in good working order and stored properly.
  • Work with Senior Sanctuary Manager to remove trash, plant native vegetation, and build nesting structures as needed and appropriate. Use manual or chemical methods to control invasive and non-native plant species.
  • Perform household maintenance such as sweeping, mopping, laundry and making beds.
  • Other manual labor tasks as required.

Qualifications and Experience

  • High School Diploma or equivalent, as well as 1+ years experience in the land management field required. 
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills and the ability to work cooperatively with a wide variety of people in demanding conditions and maintain a positive attitude.
  • Ability to work independently, as well as, part of a team.
  • Great attention to detail and safety, as well as, the ability to keep organized and accurate records and work efficiently without direct supervision.
  • Ability to operate and maintain a motorized boat required.
  • Ability to maintain outboard motors, operate and maintain hand and gasoline operated tools.
  • Ability to maneuver safely in area waterways.
  • Ability to perform hard physical work for extended and irregular periods, under adverse conditions and extreme weather conditions with or without accommodation. Requires the ability to lift up to 50 pounds.
  • Flexible availability, with a willingness to work evenings and weekends, if needed.
  • Interest in and commitment to the mission of the National Audubon Society.
  • Valid Driver's License.

COVID Policy

All staff must be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 no later than January 31, 2022, unless they are approved by Human Resources for a qualified exemption. Those unvaccinated after January 31st will be required to follow a weekly testing protocol.


All unvaccinated staff are required to wear masks or other approved facial coverings while working indoors at all times or outdoors when social distancing cannot be maintained. Further, effective December 13th, any unvaccinated staff person entering an Audubon building must submit a negative Covid-19 test that has been taken within 72 hours. 


This policy is effective through February 27th and may be changed due to changes in the law and/or changes to Audubon policies such as the Return to Work/Hybrid Work policy.


All new hires must be fully vaccinated prior to their start of employment unless they are pre-qualified by HR for exemption.
