Position Summary

The Senior Development Manager, Coastal Flyways, will play an important role in managing Audubon’s individual giving program on the coasts—18 staff based in 10 states who raised $17 million + in FY22. This position will report to the National Audubon Society’s Vice President, Development, Coastal Flyways and Events and will work closely with staff across the development team and beyond. The incumbent will serve in a project management capacity, helping to coordinate, structure, and drive forward through analysis the team’s fundraising activity. They will also work behind the scenes to support the VP’s personal relationship management and fundraising. This is a full-time position. There is a preference for the candidate to be based at NYHQ but for the right individual, we will consider alternative locations.

Essential Functions

  • Working in partnership with the VP, facilitate the cultivation and elevation of relationships with principal gift level managed prospects assigned to the VP through the creation of meeting preparation/follow up materials, confirmations/thank yous, other correspondence, and other interactions.
  • Develop initial strategy recommendations and prepare donor/prospect meeting briefings and event briefings for Executive Staff including the CEO, special donor correspondence, and help draft proposals and reports for solicitation and stewardship purposes.
  • Create initial gift concept papers collaboratively with VP in support of gift conversations, facilitate follow up and engagement of communications colleagues to execute on proposal deliverables.
  • Assist with timely acknowledgement of gifts (both formally and informally) made by donors assigned to the VP as well as regionally based national, state, and center board members.
  • Attend monthly meetings focused on reporting fundraising progress to field leadership, documenting outcomes and next steps, and supporting follow up with program staff and fundraising team members.
  • Ensure CBAP report is amended regularly to reflect updates and activity by gift officers working throughout the region; analyze and report on efforts to VP as requested.
  • Lead meetings with coastal team development associates, ensuring work product is high quality, best practices are shared, and coordination across teams is carried out to ensure experiences working with the development team are consistent and first-rate.
  • Track coastal team progress towards annual goals and metrics, analyze activity/data, and report on progress to VP—preparing regular (weekly, monthly, and quarterly) reports and distributing to staff as a management tool.
  • Manage Field stewardship program, coordinating gift acknowledgement process across managed territories, creating impact reports and other stewardship vehicles, and maintaining calendar of deliverables for all field offices assigned.
  • Provide design support to field-based fundraisers for proposals, and coordinate Art Department review for all materials produced by field-based team to ensure branding alignment.
  • Ensure coordination on behalf of VP across field advisory board activity, working collaboratively with development colleagues to determine attendance and role of VP at development committee meetings and full advisory board meetings; assist in the preparation of materials for meetings when required.
  • Manage information requests from development colleagues and others, helping to manage VP’s involvement and prioritization of time. Attend meetings on behalf of VP as requested and report back on outcomes and next steps.
  • Coordinate and organize accurate donor and prospect data collection and management in Salesforce.
  • Act as a Salesforce “Super User” resource for the team, ensuring proper compliance with organizational rules and best practices, recommending trainings and guidance from Development Services for staff who are not in compliance.
  • Supervise, develop, and mentor Development Associates and assist in coaching other members of the team.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications and Experience

  • Interest, understanding, and commitment to the mission of the National Audubon Society, and ability to communicate Audubon’s mission, goals, and programs effectively.
  • Bachelor's Degree and minimum 8 years' professional experience in a development position that includes portfolio management, directly and/or in support of a senior leader focused on principal gifts.
  • Understanding of basic fundraising principals, best practices, and procedures including moves management and effective fundraising pipeline development.
  • Excellent writing, editing, and proofreading skills.
  • Strong interpersonal skills; understanding of person-to-person relationships, and ability to convincingly articulate needs and goals that motivate potential donors to make gifts and existing donors to make bigger gifts.
  • Previous experience managing staff preferred.
  • Ability to interact with a wide variety of internal and external stakeholders, such as Board members other VIPs and colleagues at all levels of the organization also important.
  • A self-starter who works well independently and as part of a team in a fast-paced and results-oriented environment, can manage multiple projects simultaneously, prioritize workload, and ensure deadlines are met.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality, while exercising discretion and personal judgment where appropriate.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office (specifically Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook) and development database programs required.
  • A flexible approach to work, with the willingness to work some evenings and weekends and travel for events when necessary.
  • Ability to travel throughout the network up to 20% of the time.
