The National Audubon Society is a nonprofit conservation organization that protects birds and the places they need, today and tomorrow. The Communications Associate will support overall engagement with conservation and advocacy efforts across the state. The primary day-to-day tasks will be writing, producing, and posting social media posts, web content, emails, and event registration forms. The ideal candidate will be a strong writer, a creative thinker, and a fast actor, able to juggle multiple projects at one time, and regularly interface with key advocacy and science teams to ensure communications support organizational goals.

Compensation is a range of $21-$24/hour.
• Implement tasks as defined by North Carolina’s communications strategies to broaden our programmatic visibility and reach, enhance development goals, and deepen the impact of our work.
• Engage Audubon’s 53,000 members across North Carolina on local, state, and national conservation issues, focusing on issues related to coastal policies, forest stewardship, native plants, climate change and renewable energy, environmental program funding, etc.
• Create, edit, and post social media content to our state pages (Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram), and develop creative methods for increasing engagement.
• Write, edit, and produce content for the Audubon North Carolina website.
• Coordinate, build and distribute emails for state programs, including monthly newsletter, event promotion, and advocacy emails.
• Build and distribute to staff regular communications reports.
• Draft press releases, media alerts, and pitch stories as needed. Monitor and report on mentions of our work in the media.
• Create and disseminate materials related to advocacy campaigns and events, including social media toolkits, petitions, and sign-up forms.
• Report on outcomes of monthly and targeted campaigns. Evaluate results of communications and make recommendations to enhance strategy.
• Ensure Audubon’s strategic imperative of equity, diversity and inclusion is included in messaging.
Other job-related duties as assigned.
• Associates or Bachelor’s degree in English, communications, marketing or related field and 0-2 years’ experience in a related field. An equivalent combination of education and experience will also be considered.
• Excellent writing skills with a knack for online communications and crafting messaging for multiple, specific audiences.
• Tech-savviness and ability to learn how to use tools to manage online communications.
• Proficiency with social media platforms, including Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram.
• A willingness to travel, as needed, and participate in programs occurring during and after typical business hours.
• Must have reliable transportation.
