Position Summary

Audubon Center for Birds of Prey focuses on the conservation of Florida’s raptors through clinical and rehabilitation programs, citizen science and education and outreach in the Central Florida community. Located in Central Florida, Audubon Center for Birds of Prey is a 3-acre urban environmental Center including three buildings, paved paths, 12 aviaries, two mews areas and a large flight barn.

The Senior Facilities Assistant is responsible for maintaining all structures, buildings, vehicles, equipment, irrigation and property to support daily operations at Audubon Center for Birds of Prey. This can include repairs/replacement to wood structure maintaining property open to the public

They will report to the Center Director, working with administrative and bird care staff. They will perform maintenance and facility needs including but not limited to aviary improvements and repairs, building repairs and maintenance, grounds maintenance and minor electrical and plumbing needs. Additionally, the Senior Facilities Assistant organizes and oversees all work projects in an efficient, safe and productive manner that may involve Center volunteers and staff with specific tasks as it relates to the operations of the Center.

Essential Functions

• Responsible for the condition of all buildings and their systems, to include painting, plumbing, basic electrical and carpentry, general repairs, and other needs.
• Maintain grounds, including upkeep of lawns, gardens, walkways, decks, educational exhibits, parking lot, and wetland.
• Oversee the maintenance and repairs to plumbing, irrigation and electrical systems.
• Perform a variety of housekeeping and landscaping duties to maintain facilities in a green friendly, safe and sanitary condition
• Coordinate the care of the Center’s vehicles.
• Responsible for maintenance supplies and equipment. Use of appropriate safety equipment is mandatory.
• Supervise and work with volunteers on upkeep and enhancement of the buildings and grounds.
• Provide assistance for weekend or after-hours meetings, weddings and other events that use the facilities as needed.
• Supervise group volunteer project days.
• Other job-related duties as assigned.

Qualifications and Experience

• 2+ years’ professional experience with a variety of facility and/or maintenance work, plus a high school diploma. Experience will be considered in lieu of education.
• Must possess demonstrated, basic knowledge and experience in carpentry, plumbing, electrical procedures, irrigation repairs, lawncare, general building and vehicle maintenance. Other craft skills highly desirable.
• A self-starter, one with the ability to work independently and manage multiple, changing priorities.
• Must be self-motivated, energetic, team player with excellent interpersonal skills.
• Use of hand tools, lawn equipment, water systems, power equipment will be required.
• Must display very good communication, organization and time management skills.
• CPR certified and have basic first aid skills and training desirable.
• Should be able to do heavy lifting, operate various tools, machinery and other equipment with or without accommodation.
• Interest in nature, conservation, education, working outdoors and working with volunteers desirable.
• Must have a flexible approach to work and its hours; ability to work in various, outdoor seasonal Florida conditions also necessary.
• Must have a valid driver’s license.
