Position Summary

The Greenwich Audubon Center opened in 1943 as the National Audubon Society’s first environmental education center in the United States. The 285-acre sanctuary has approximately seven miles of trails that lead to a hardwood forest, old fields, a lake, streams and vernal ponds. Each year, over tens of thousands of adults and children, visit Audubon to hike and participate in school, family and adult programs, including citizen science surveys and counts, land stewardship projects, summer camps, lectures and presentations, and natural history and ecology education programs. Ultimately, our programs give people the information they need to make informed decisions about how they interact with nature. Through education, public policy, and science, we hope to build a culture of conservation and environmental stewards for now and in the future.


The First Aid Director will be responsible for responding to all first aid/CPR incidences and emergencies that take place during the Audubon Greenwich Summer Camp hours 9:00 AM – 3:00 PM, Monday through Friday starting in mid-June and ending in mid-August.



$19.00 - $21.00 / hour

Essential Functions

Prior to the start of camp:

  • Organize the First Aid and CPR supplies and First Aid packs.
  • Update the emergency contact information and the summer camp staff roster.
  • Assist with the preparations of the summer camp staff training.

During camp

  • Inform the camp staff regarding all camper allergies and medications in their prospective camp groups.
  • Support summer camp staff as needed.
  • Enter summer camper health information into the camp roster spreadsheets.
  • Maintain the outstanding paperwork log and contact parents to remind them about their outstanding paperwork.
  • Take photographs of camp activities whenever possible.
  • Attend weekly summer camp staff meetings.
  • Respond to all first-aid and CPR Emergencies
  • Contact parents when needed i.e.: if a camper is late, forgotten their lunch, or needs to go home, etc.
  • Enter all first aid injuries into the health log.
  • Drop off accident report log for sign-off at the camp physician’s office each week.
  • Monitor first aid supplies and alert the camp director when supplies are getting low.
  • Collect all camp medications at the end of each day and store them in the designated locked cabinet.
  • Perform all first aid director duties as outlined by the CT Youth Camp Policy.
  • Follow all Audubon and CDC guidelines for Covid-19 safety, including mandating proper distancing between campers and staff, mask-wearing, not sharing materials, keeping groups separated, cleaning and disinfecting, etc.
  • Deep cleaning and disinfecting of equipment, materials, tables and chairs and other items used during the day will be expected at the end of each camp day or as needed. The Director of First Aid will be required to wear a mask at all times while on the Audubon grounds, with many built-in mask breaks at safe distances throughout the day.
  • All Audubon staff are required to use their best judgement in the determination of the safety of personal activities outside of camp hours. By joining the Greenwich Audubon team, staff commit to refrain from crowded, unmasked or indoor activities where the CDC has established there is a greater likelihood of Covid transmission.

Qualifications and Experience

  • Good communicator and team player with great attention to detail.
  • Bachelor’s degree or higher.
  • CPR/First Aid Certification.
  • Knowledge of local ecology and natural history.
  • Ability to teach natural history concepts, as well as the desire to work outdoors and lead hikes.
  • Experience working with children preferred.
  • Strong oral communication skills, especially when speaking with camp parents and/or guardians.
  • Ability to work well as part of the team.
  • Must be able to commit to the entire period of work.
  • Must have current immunizations/medical forms; CPR and First Aid certification a plus.
  • Must have a valid U.S. driver’s license.
