Database Engineer

The National Audubon Society is implementing a strategic data platform to support its work in conservation. As the capabilities of the data platform grow, so does the demand for making available high-quality data sets across all areas of the organization.

This is a remote position within the Data and Analytics team. The Database Engineer will be charged with building data solutions within a modern-day data stack. This team member will work closely with other Data and Analytics team members (membership analytics, geospatial engineers, data scientists and software engineers) and report to the Director, Data Engineering.

Working closely with other Data and Analytics team members and project stakeholders, the Database Engineer will support projects such as:

• Participate in building out an enterprise data architecture that includes ELT, systems integration, governance, cataloging and quality control
• Improving inclusive outreach to prospective and current Audubon members by bringing together disparate data sets from CRM systems, census, demographic, social media and web analytics data sources
• Manage data related to conservation advocacy actions, which further the organization’s mission of equitably protecting birds, their habitats and the people who share them
• Integrating data from other conservation and research organizations to support scientific research and policy guidance
• Enabling geospatial processing of ornithological, climate, membership and demographic data within the data warehouse
• Support data science environment for ornithological and membership data. Implement MLOps workflows

Compensation:

Salary range based on geo-differentials:

$65,000 - $85,000 = All other locations

$75,000 - $95,000 = Alaska, Los Angeles, Connecticut, D.C., Chicago, Oyster Bay,NY

$85,000 - $110,000 = NYC, San Francisco, Seattle

• Identify and ingest data from a wide variety of internal and external sources, including conservation, membership, finance, HR, and geospatial data sets.
• Transform ingested data sets into high-quality data marts for use in business intelligence, analytics and data science applications.
• Assess and monitor the quality of data to ensure fitness for purpose and proactively detect and report problems.
• Support operational data pulls such as magazine mailing, membership calculations, Audubon chapter incentive reports, etc.
• Ensure data sets are properly documented within the data catalog.
• Develop dashboards, reports, and other data artifacts that improve stakeholders’ ability to make data-driven decisions.
• Collaborate with various members of the organization to perform ad-hoc data explorations and analysis.
• Administer secure access to the data, including implementing data hiding strategies such as row-level permissions and data masking.
• Contribute to the development and implementation of a disaster recovery program.
• Perform other job-related duties as assigned.

• 3 years of experience as a Database Engineer, or in similar roles.
• Degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Statistics, Data Science, Mathematics, or related quantitative field preferred. Relevant experience can be substituted.
• Hands-on experience in relational database or data warehouse environments such as SQL Server, PostgreSQL, Snowflake or Redshift.
• Strong SQL coding ability.
• Proficiency in at least one high-level programming language such as Python, Java, or .NET.
• Experience with data normalization and de-normalization and when to apply each.
• Understanding of query performance profiling and tuning.
• Familiarity with software version control, such as Git.
• Experience with dbt or similar data transformation frameworks is a plus.
• Demonstrated ability to communicate technical information to non-technical audiences.
• Self-starter who can work as part of a virtual team and remain motivated in a dynamic environment.
• Ability to collaborate with colleagues with transparency, inclusivity and trust.
• Genuine passion for conservation and the mission of the National Audubon Society.
